Moreover he demonstrated excellence as a&nbsp;<a title=\"Fencing\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fencing\">fencer<\/a>, an athlete and an accomplished dancer. His historical significance lies partly in his distinctive background as a biracial&nbsp;<a title=\"Free people of color\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Free_people_of_color\">free man of color<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-1\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chevalier_de_Saint-Georges#cite_note-1\">[a]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;Bologne was the first&nbsp;<a title=\"List of classical music composers by era\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/List_of_classical_music_composers_by_era#Classical_era\">classical composer<\/a>&nbsp;of&nbsp;<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"African descent\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/African_descent\">African descent<\/a>&nbsp;to attain widespread acclaim in European music. He composed an array of&nbsp;<a title=\"Violin concerto\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Violin_concerto\">violin concertos<\/a>,&nbsp;<a title=\"String quartet\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/String_quartet\">string quartets<\/a>,&nbsp;<a title=\"Sinfonia concertante\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sinfonia_concertante\">sinfonia concertantes<\/a>, violin duets,&nbsp;<a title=\"Sonata\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sonata\">sonatas<\/a>, two&nbsp;<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Symphonies\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Symphonies\">symphonies<\/a>&nbsp;and an assortment of stage works, notably&nbsp;<a title=\"Op\u00e9ra comique\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Op%C3%A9ra_comique\">op\u00e9ra comique<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-2\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chevalier_de_Saint-Georges#cite_note-2\">[1]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Born in the&nbsp;<a title=\"French colonial empire\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/French_colonial_empire\">French colony<\/a>&nbsp;of&nbsp;<a title=\"Guadeloupe\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Guadeloupe\">Guadeloupe<\/a>, his father, Georges Bologne de Saint-Georges, was a wealthy, white&nbsp;<a title=\"Plantation\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Plantation\">plantation owner<\/a>, while his mother was one of the&nbsp;<a title=\"Creole peoples\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Creole_peoples\">Creole<\/a>&nbsp;people Georges kept enslaved.<sup id=\"cite_ref-4\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chevalier_de_Saint-Georges#cite_note-4\">[b]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;At the age of seven, he was taken to&nbsp;<a title=\"Kingdom of France\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kingdom_of_France\">France<\/a>&nbsp;where he began his formal education. As a young man he won a fencing contest leading to his appointment as a &#8220;<span title=\"French-language text\"><i lang=\"fr\"><a title=\"Maison du Roi\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Maison_du_Roi#The_Military_Maison_du_Roi\">gendarme de la garde du roi<\/a><\/i><\/span>&#8221; by king&nbsp;<a title=\"Louis XVI\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Louis_XVI\">Louis XVI<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-FOOTNOTEBanat200660-62,_67,_70_5-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chevalier_de_Saint-Georges#cite_note-FOOTNOTEBanat200660-62,_67,_70-5\">[3]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;Having received music and&nbsp;<a title=\"Musical composition\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Musical_composition\">musical composition<\/a>&nbsp;lessons, he joined the orchestra&nbsp;<span title=\"French-language text\"><span lang=\"fr\">Le Concert des Amateurs<\/span><\/span>; culminating in his appointment as its conductor in 1773.<sup id=\"cite_ref-FOOTNOTEBanat2006112-118_6-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chevalier_de_Saint-Georges#cite_note-FOOTNOTEBanat2006112-118-6\">[4]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>In 1776, Saint-Georges began conducting the&nbsp;<a title=\"Paris Opera\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Paris_Opera\">Paris Opera<\/a>. However, this prospect was thwarted by opposition from certain performers who resisted the idea of being led by an individual of color.<sup id=\"cite_ref-FOOTNOTEBanat2006180-187_7-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chevalier_de_Saint-Georges#cite_note-FOOTNOTEBanat2006180-187-7\">[5]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;Around this time, he shifted his focus to composing operas. In 1781, he joined a new orchestra&nbsp;<span title=\"French-language text\"><span lang=\"fr\"><a title=\"Concert de la Loge Olympique\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Concert_de_la_Loge_Olympique\">Le Concert de la Loge Olympique<\/a><\/span><\/span>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-FOOTNOTEBanat2006258-259_8-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chevalier_de_Saint-Georges#cite_note-FOOTNOTEBanat2006258-259-8\">[6]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;By 1785, he had stopped composing instrumental works altogether.<sup id=\"cite_ref-FOOTNOTEBanat2006242_9-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chevalier_de_Saint-Georges#cite_note-FOOTNOTEBanat2006242-9\">[7]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;Following the outbreak of the&nbsp;<a title=\"French Revolution\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/French_Revolution\">French Revolution<\/a>&nbsp;in 1789, Saint-Georges left for England. Upon his return to&nbsp;<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"First French Republic\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/First_French_Republic\">France<\/a>, he joined the&nbsp;<a title=\"National Guard (France)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/National_Guard_(France)\">National Guard<\/a>&nbsp;in&nbsp;<a title=\"Lille\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lille\">Lille<\/a>&nbsp;and then served as a&nbsp;<a title=\"Colonel\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Colonel\">colonel<\/a>&nbsp;in the&nbsp;<span title=\"French-language text\"><span lang=\"fr\"><a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"American Legion (French Army)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/American_Legion_(French_Army)\">L\u00e9gion St.-Georges<\/a><\/span><\/span>,<sup id=\"cite_ref-FOOTNOTEBanat2006373,_500_10-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chevalier_de_Saint-Georges#cite_note-FOOTNOTEBanat2006373,_500-10\">[8]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;which comprised &#8220;citizens of color&#8221;. The next year he was visited by his wife, Nanon, and his son. There he met the fencing masters&nbsp;<a title=\"Domenico Angelo\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Domenico_Angelo\">Domenico Angelo<\/a>&nbsp;and his son&nbsp;<a title=\"Henry Angelo\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Henry_Angelo\">Henry<\/a>, the mysterious&nbsp;<a title=\"Chevalier d'\u00c9on\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chevalier_d%27%C3%89on\">Chevalier d&#8217;\u00c9on<\/a>&nbsp;and the teenage&nbsp;<a title=\"Louis Philippe II, Duke of Orl\u00e9ans\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Louis_Philippe_II,_Duke_of_Orl%C3%A9ans\">Louis Philippe II, Duke of Orl\u00e9ans<\/a>, all of whom would play a role in his future.<\/p>\n<p>On 17 May 1779,&nbsp;<a title=\"John Adams\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Adams\">John Adams<\/a>&nbsp;made an entry in his diary that mistakenly described St.-George as the son of a governor rather than a&nbsp;<a title=\"Ferme g\u00e9n\u00e9rale\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ferme_g%C3%A9n%C3%A9rale\">tax collector<\/a>: &#8220;<a title=\"Arthur Lee (diplomat)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Arthur_Lee_(diplomat)\">Lee<\/a>&nbsp;gave Us an Account of St. George at Paris, a Molatto Man, Son of a former Governor of Guadaloupe, by a Negro Woman. &#8230; He is the most accomplished Man in Europe in Riding, Running, Shooting, Fencing, Dancing, Musick. He will hit the Button, any Button on the Coat or Waistcoat of the greatest Masters. Marie-Antoinette preferred to hold her musicales in the salon of her&nbsp;<a title=\"Petit appartement de la reine\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Petit_appartement_de_la_reine\">private apartment<\/a>&nbsp;in the palace or in the recently established&nbsp;<a title=\"Th\u00e9\u00e2tre de la Reine\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Th%C3%A9%C3%A2tre_de_la_Reine\">Th\u00e9\u00e2tre de la Reine<\/a>&nbsp;in the&nbsp;<a title=\"Gardens of Versailles\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gardens_of_Versailles\">gardens of Versailles<\/a>. Over the next two years, he published two more violin concertos and a pair of&nbsp;<i>Symphonies concertantes<\/i>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-FOOTNOTEBanat2006202_79-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chevalier_de_Saint-Georges#cite_note-FOOTNOTEBanat2006202-79\">[70]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;Thereafter, except for his final set of quartets (Op. 14, 1785), Saint-Georges abandoned composing instrumental music in favor of opera.<sup id=\"cite_ref-FOOTNOTEBanat2006242_9-1\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chevalier_de_Saint-Georges#cite_note-FOOTNOTEBanat2006242-9\">[7]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;He was still acquainted and remained friendly with several composers (notably,&nbsp;<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Salieri\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Salieri\">Salieri<\/a>,&nbsp;<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Gretry\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gretry\">Gretry<\/a>, and&nbsp;<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Gluck\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gluck\">Gluck<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><i>Ernestine<\/i>, Saint-Georges&#8217;s first opera, with a&nbsp;<a title=\"Libretto\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Libretto\">libretto<\/a>&nbsp;by&nbsp;<a title=\"Pierre Choderlos de Laclos\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pierre_Choderlos_de_Laclos\">Pierre Choderlos de Laclos<\/a>, the notorious author of&nbsp;<i><a title=\"Les Liaisons dangereuses\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Les_Liaisons_dangereuses\">Les Liaisons dangereuses<\/a><\/i>, was performed on 19 July 1777, at the&nbsp;<a title=\"Com\u00e9die-Italienne\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Com%C3%A9die-Italienne\">Com\u00e9die-Italienne<\/a>. It did not survive its premiere. The critics liked the music, but panned the weak libretto, which was then usually judged more important than the music.<sup id=\"cite_ref-FOOTNOTEBanat2006200-201_80-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chevalier_de_Saint-Georges#cite_note-FOOTNOTEBanat2006200-201-80\">[71]<\/a><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-81\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chevalier_de_Saint-Georges#cite_note-81\">[72]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;The Queen attended with her entourage to support Saint-Georges&#8217;s opera but, after the audience kept echoing a character cracking his whip and crying &#8220;Oh\u00e9, Oh\u00e9,&#8221; the Queen gave it the coup de grace by calling to her driver: &#8220;to Versailles, Oh\u00e9!&#8221;<sup id=\"cite_ref-FOOTNOTELa_Harpe1807130\u2013135_82-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chevalier_de_Saint-Georges#cite_note-FOOTNOTELa_Harpe1807130%E2%80%93135-82\">[73]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>After the failure of the opera, Saint-Georges was in financial trouble. Madame de Montesson, the&nbsp;<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Morganatic\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Morganatic\">morganatic<\/a>&nbsp;wife of the&nbsp;<a title=\"Louis Philippe I, Duke of Orl\u00e9ans\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Louis_Philippe_I,_Duke_of_Orl%C3%A9ans\">Duc d&#8217;Orl\u00e9ans<\/a>, realized her ambition to engage Saint-Georges as music director of her fashionable private theater. From 5 July to 11 September 1778, Saint-Georges lived at Grimm&#8217;s residence in&nbsp;<a title=\"Rue de la Chauss\u00e9e-d'Antin\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rue_de_la_Chauss%C3%A9e-d%27Antin\">Chauss\u00e9e d&#8217;Antin<\/a>&nbsp;just as did&nbsp;<a title=\"Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wolfgang_Amadeus_Mozart\">Mozart<\/a>&nbsp;who moved in after&nbsp;<a title=\"Anna Maria Mozart\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Anna_Maria_Mozart\">his mother<\/a>&nbsp;died;<sup id=\"cite_ref-FOOTNOTEBanat2006171_83-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chevalier_de_Saint-Georges#cite_note-FOOTNOTEBanat2006171-83\">[74]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;both left in September. The Duc d&#8217;Orl\u00e9ans appointed Saint-Georges as&nbsp;<i>Lieutenant de la chasse<\/i>&nbsp;of his vast hunting grounds at&nbsp;<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Raincy\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Raincy\">Raincy<\/a>, with an additional salary of 2000&nbsp;<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Livres\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Livres\">Livres<\/a>&nbsp;a year. &#8220;Saint-Georges the mulatto so strong, so adroit, was one of the hunters&#8230;&#8221;<sup id=\"cite_ref-FOOTNOTEVig\u00e9e-Lebrun186977_84-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chevalier_de_Saint-Georges#cite_note-FOOTNOTEVig%C3%A9e-Lebrun186977-84\">[75]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Saint-Georges wrote and rehearsed his second opera, appropriately named&nbsp;<i>La Chasse<\/i>&nbsp;(The Hunt) at Raincy. At its premiere in the&nbsp;<i>Th\u00e9\u00e2tre Italien<\/i>, &#8220;The public received the work with loud applause. Vastly superior compared with&nbsp;<i>Ernestine<\/i>&nbsp;&#8230; there is every reason to encourage him to continue [writing operas].&#8221;<sup id=\"cite_ref-85\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chevalier_de_Saint-Georges#cite_note-85\">[76]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;<i>La Chasse<\/i>&nbsp;was repeated at her Majesty&#8217;s request at the royal&nbsp;<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Chateau de Marly\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chateau_de_Marly\">chateau at Marly<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-FOOTNOTEBardin2006112_86-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chevalier_de_Saint-Georges#cite_note-FOOTNOTEBardin2006112-86\">[77]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;Saint-Georges&#8217;s most successful&nbsp;<i>op\u00e9ra comique<\/i>&nbsp;was&nbsp;<i><a title=\"L'amant anonyme\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/L%27amant_anonyme\">L&#8217;amant anonyme<\/a><\/i>, which was premiered in 1780, with a libretto based on a play of the same name by Madame de Montesson&#8217;s niece,&nbsp;<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Madame de Genlis\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Madame_de_Genlis\">Madame de Genlis<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-87\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chevalier_de_Saint-Georges#cite_note-87\">[j]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>In 1785, the Duke of Orl\u00e9ans died. Madame de Montesson, having been forbidden by the King to mourn him, shuttered their mansion, closed her theater, and retired to a convent for about a year. With his patrons gone, Saint-Georges lost not only his positions but also his apartment. His friend, Louis Philippe, now Duke of Orl\u00e9ans, presented him with a small flat in the&nbsp;<a title=\"Palais-Royal\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Palais-Royal\">Palais-Royal<\/a>, opposite the Louvre. Saint-Georges was drawn into the whirlpool of political and social activity around Philippe and&nbsp;<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Brissot de Warville\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Brissot_de_Warville\">Brissot de Warville<\/a>, admirers of the&nbsp;<a title=\"Westminster system\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Westminster_system\">British parliamentary system<\/a>&nbsp;and the&nbsp;<a title=\"Constitutional monarchy\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Constitutional_monarchy\">constitutional monarchy<\/a>, the main opposition to the French&nbsp;<a title=\"Absolute monarchy\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Absolute_monarchy\">absolute monarchy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the Duke&#8217;s ambitious plans for re-constructing the Palais-Royal left the&nbsp;<i>Orchestre Olympique<\/i>&nbsp;without a home and Saint-Georges unemployed. Seeing his prot\u00e9g\u00e9 at loose ends and recalling that the&nbsp;<a title=\"George IV\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/George_IV\">Prince of Wales<\/a>&nbsp;often expressed a wish to meet the legendary fencer, Philippe approved Brissot&#8217;s plan to dispatch Saint-Georges to London. He believed it was a way to ensure the Regent-in-waiting&#8217;s support of Philippe as the future &#8220;Regent&#8221; of France. But Brissot had a secret agenda as well. In his&nbsp;<a title=\"M\u00e9moires secrets\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/M%C3%A9moires_secrets\">Secret Memoirs<\/a>, Bachaumont mentions that the attack took place on the night of 1 May 1779. It was not Saint-George who was targeted by a scorned husband, but his friend baron Gillier, comte de Saint-Julien? Saint-Georges played one of Robineau&#8217;s concertos at the&nbsp;<a title=\"Anacreontic Society\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Anacreontic_Society\">Anacreontic Society<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-103\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chevalier_de_Saint-Georges#cite_note-103\">[92]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;It is supposed he delivered&nbsp;<a title=\"Jacques Pierre Brissot\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jacques_Pierre_Brissot\">Brissot<\/a>&#8216;s request to translate the publications of the abolitionists MPs&nbsp;<a title=\"William Wilberforce\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/William_Wilberforce\">William Wilberforce<\/a>,&nbsp;<a title=\"John Wilkes\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Wilkes\">John Wilkes<\/a>, and Reverend&nbsp;<a title=\"Thomas Clarkson\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thomas_Clarkson\">Thomas Clarkson<\/a>&nbsp;into French. On 14 July 1789, the&nbsp;<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Fall of the Bastille\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fall_of_the_Bastille\">fall of the Bastille<\/a>&nbsp;took place, starting the&nbsp;<a title=\"French Revolution\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/French_Revolution\">French Revolution<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>As Saint-Georges was seen as a&nbsp;<a title=\"Mulatto\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mulatto\">mulatto<\/a>&nbsp;but actually a&nbsp;<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Free man of color\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Free_man_of_color\">free man of color<\/a>, he was affected by the&nbsp;<a title=\"Code Noir\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Code_Noir\">racism and racist laws<\/a>&nbsp;in pre-Revolutionary France. After the&nbsp;<a title=\"Abolition of feudalism in France\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Abolition_of_feudalism_in_France\">abolition of feudalism in France<\/a>&nbsp;Saint-Georges refrained from using his title &#8220;<a title=\"Knight\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Knight\">chevalier<\/a>&#8220;, and was addressed as&nbsp;<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Citizen\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Citizen\">&#8220;citoyen&#8221;<\/a>. Saint-Georges stayed at&nbsp;<i>Grenier&#8217;s<\/i>&nbsp;an expensive hotel on&nbsp;<a title=\"Jermyn Street\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jermyn_Street\">Jermyn Street<\/a>&nbsp;which later became patronized by French refugees. Saint-Georges had the idea of establishing in England and was entertaining himself lavishly.<sup id=\"cite_ref-FOOTNOTEAngelo183424\u201328_109-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chevalier_de_Saint-Georges#cite_note-FOOTNOTEAngelo183424%E2%80%9328-109\">[98]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;His assignment was to stay close to the Prince of Wales, known for his excessive lifestyle. On 15 August, the Prince took Saint-Georges to his&nbsp;<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Marine Pavilion (Brighton, England)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Marine_Pavilion_(Brighton,_England)\">Marine Pavilion<\/a>&nbsp;in Brighton for a fencing match.<sup id=\"cite_ref-FOOTNOTEAngelo1830450_110-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chevalier_de_Saint-Georges#cite_note-FOOTNOTEAngelo1830450-110\">[99]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;He also took him fox hunting and to the races at&nbsp;<a title=\"Newmarket, Suffolk\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Newmarket,_Suffolk\">Newmarket<\/a>. After the&nbsp;<a title=\"Women's March on Versailles\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Women%27s_March_on_Versailles\">Women&#8217;s March on Versailles<\/a>, the Duke was accused of initiating it.&nbsp;<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Marquis de La Fayette\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Marquis_de_La_Fayette\">Marquis de La Fayette<\/a>, probably jealous of the Duke&#8217;s popularity, persuaded the king to send him on a mission to England.<sup id=\"cite_ref-111\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chevalier_de_Saint-Georges#cite_note-111\">[100]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;When he arrived on 14 October, he became the Prince&#8217;s regular companion. On the wall a print of&nbsp;<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Saint George and the dragon\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Saint_George_and_the_dragon\">Saint George and the dragon<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>On his first trip Saint-Georges passed Brissot&#8217;s request to the British&nbsp;<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Abolitionists\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Abolitionists\">abolitionists<\/a>, they complied by translating their publications into French for his fledgling&nbsp;<i><a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Soci\u00e9t\u00e9 des amis des Noirs\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Soci%C3%A9t%C3%A9_des_amis_des_Noirs\">Soci\u00e9t\u00e9 des amis des Noirs<\/a><\/i>. Banat assumes Saint-Georges met with them again,<sup id=\"cite_ref-FOOTNOTEBanat2006281_114-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chevalier_de_Saint-Georges#cite_note-FOOTNOTEBanat2006281-114\">[103]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;but&nbsp;<a title=\"Adam Hochschild\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Adam_Hochschild\">Adam Hochschild<\/a>&nbsp;in&nbsp;<a title=\"Bury the Chains\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bury_the_Chains\">Bury the Chains<\/a>&nbsp;did not find any trace of this.&nbsp;<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Abb\u00e9 Gr\u00e9goire\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Abb%C3%A9_Gr%C3%A9goire\">Abb\u00e9 Gr\u00e9goire<\/a>&nbsp;regretted Saint-Georges never joined the radical clubs, like the Jacobins, or the&nbsp;<i>Soci\u00e9t\u00e9 des amis des Noirs<\/i>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-115\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chevalier_de_Saint-Georges#cite_note-115\">[104]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;It appears Saint-Georges was more a moderate democrat, influenced by the ideas of the&nbsp;<a title=\"Patriotic Society of 1789\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Patriotic_Society_of_1789\">Patriotic Society of 1789<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-116\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chevalier_de_Saint-Georges#cite_note-116\">[105]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>In late June 1790,&nbsp;<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Philippe \u00c9galit\u00e9\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Philippe_%C3%89galit%C3%A9\">Philippe \u00c9galit\u00e9<\/a>, dubbed &#8220;The Red Duke&#8221; in London, realized that his &#8220;mission&#8221; there was a ruse used by the French king to get him out of the country. Philippe clung to a vague promise made by King Louis to make him Regent of the&nbsp;<a title=\"Austrian Netherlands\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Austrian_Netherlands\">Southern Netherlands<\/a>. Saint-Georges was unable to pay his bill at&nbsp;<i>Grenier&#8217;s<\/i>&nbsp;but found a solution and organized a match.<sup id=\"cite_ref-FOOTNOTEBanat2006351,_353_117-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chevalier_de_Saint-Georges#cite_note-FOOTNOTEBanat2006351,_353-117\">[106]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;The next day they traveled to Belgium. On their journey, Saint-Georges was attacked again:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"templatequote\"><p>&#8220;Early in July, walking home from&nbsp;<a title=\"Greenwich\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Greenwich\">Greenwich<\/a>, a man armed with a pistol demanded his purse. The Chevalier disarmed the man&#8230; but when four more rogues hidden until then attacked him, he put them all out of commission. M. de Saint Georges received only some contusions which did not keep him from going on that night to play music in the company of friends.&#8221; The nature of the attack, with four attackers emerging after the first one made sure they had the right victim, has been claimed to be an assassination attempt disguised as a hold-up, arranged by the &#8220;Slave Trade&#8221; to put an end to his abolitionist activities.<sup id=\"cite_ref-FOOTNOTEBanat2006294_118-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chevalier_de_Saint-Georges#cite_note-FOOTNOTEBanat2006294-118\">[107]<\/a><\/sup><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In Brussels the people wanted a&nbsp;<a title=\"United Belgian States\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_Belgian_States\">United Belgium Republic<\/a>&nbsp;and rejected Philippe. Though ill, he fought with that grace that is his trademark. Lightning is no faster than his arms and in spite of running a fever, he demonstrated astonishing vigor.&#8221; Two days later looking worse but in need of funds, he offered another assault, this one for the officers of the garrison. But his illness proved so serious that it sent him to bed for six long weeks.<sup id=\"cite_ref-FOOTNOTEBanat2006359_120-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chevalier_de_Saint-Georges#cite_note-FOOTNOTEBanat2006359-120\">[109]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;The diagnosis according to medical science at the time was &#8220;<a title=\"Brain fever\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Brain_fever\">brain fever<\/a>&#8220;. Unconscious for days, he was taken in and nursed by some kind citizens of Lille. While still bedridden Saint-Georges began to compose an opera for Lille&#8217;s theater company. Calling it&nbsp;<i>Guillome tout Coeur, ou les amis du village<\/i>, he dedicated it to the citizens of Lille. &#8220;<i>Guillaume<\/i>&nbsp;is an opera in one act. The music by Saint-George is full of sweet warmth of motion and spirit&#8230;Its [individual] pieces are distinguished by their melodic lines and the vigor of their harmony. The public&#8230;made the hall resound with its justly deserved applause.&#8221;<sup id=\"cite_ref-FOOTNOTEBanat2006359_120-1\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chevalier_de_Saint-Georges#cite_note-FOOTNOTEBanat2006359-120\">[109]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;It was to be his last opera, lost, including its libretto. He participated in local events and took charge of the music.<sup id=\"cite_ref-FOOTNOTEBanat2006364-367_121-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chevalier_de_Saint-Georges#cite_note-FOOTNOTEBanat2006364-367-121\">[110]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>The singer&nbsp;<a title=\"Louise Fusil\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Louise_Fusil\">Louise Fusil<\/a>, who had idolized Saint-Georges since she was a girl of 15, wrote: &#8220;In 1791, I stopped in&nbsp;<a title=\"Amiens\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Amiens\">Amiens<\/a>&nbsp;where St. Georges and Lamothe were waiting for me, committed to giving some concerts over the Easter holidays. We were to repeat them in&nbsp;<a title=\"Tournai\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tournai\">Tournai<\/a>&nbsp;in June.<sup id=\"cite_ref-FOOTNOTEBanat2006305,_360_122-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chevalier_de_Saint-Georges#cite_note-FOOTNOTEBanat2006305,_360-122\">[111]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;But the French refugees assembled in that town just across the border, could not abide the&nbsp;<a title=\"Creole peoples\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Creole_peoples\">Cr\u00e9ole<\/a>&nbsp;they believed to be an agent of the despised Duke of Orl\u00e9ans. Its three parts depicted the little bird greeting the spring; passionately pursuing the object of his love, who alas, has chosen another; its voice grows weaker then, after the last sigh, it is stilled forever. This kind of program music or sound painting of scenarios such as love scenes, tempests, or battles complete with cannonades and the cries of the wounded, conveyed by a lone violin, was by that time nearly forgotten. In September 1790, having recovered, Saint-Georges was one of the first in Lille to join its&nbsp;<i><a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Garde Nationale\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Garde_Nationale\">Garde Nationale<\/a><\/i>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-FOOTNOTEBanat2006360,_373_127-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chevalier_de_Saint-Georges#cite_note-FOOTNOTEBanat2006360,_373-127\">[116]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;But not even his military duties in the&nbsp;<i>Garde Nationale<\/i>&nbsp;could prevent St. Georges from giving concerts. Saint-Georges was appointed captain and colonel in the following year.<sup id=\"cite_ref-FOOTNOTEBanat2006364-365,_368,_370,_374,_500-501_130-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chevalier_de_Saint-Georges#cite_note-FOOTNOTEBanat2006364-365,_368,_370,_374,_500-501-130\">[119]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;It was believed he died in a pistol fight in&nbsp;<a title=\"Koblenz\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Koblenz\">Koblenz<\/a>,<sup id=\"cite_ref-131\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chevalier_de_Saint-Georges#cite_note-131\">[120]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;but on 7 September 1791 he published a letter announcing he wasn&#8217;t dead.<sup id=\"cite_ref-132\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chevalier_de_Saint-Georges#cite_note-132\">[121]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>On 20 April 1792, compelled by the National Assembly,&nbsp;<a title=\"Louis XVI\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Louis_XVI\">Louis XVI<\/a>&nbsp;declared&nbsp;<a title=\"War of the First Coalition\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/War_of_the_First_Coalition\">war<\/a>&nbsp;against&nbsp;<a title=\"Archduchy of Austria\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Archduchy_of_Austria\">Archduchy of Austria<\/a>.&nbsp;<a title=\"Th\u00e9obald Dillon\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Th%C3%A9obald_Dillon\">General Dillon<\/a>, commander of Lille, was ordered to attack&nbsp;<a title=\"Tournai\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tournai\">Tournai<\/a>, reportedly only lightly defended. Instead, massive fire by the Austrian artillery turned an orderly retreat into a rout by the regular cavalry but not that of the volunteers of the&nbsp;<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Garde Nationale\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Garde_Nationale\">National Guard<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-FOOTNOTESchama1989600_133-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chevalier_de_Saint-Georges#cite_note-FOOTNOTESchama1989600-133\">[122]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;Captain St. Georges commanded the company of volunteers that held the line at&nbsp;<a title=\"Baisieux\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Baisieux\">Baisieux<\/a>&nbsp;near the Belgian border. Mid August&nbsp;<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Marquis Lafayette\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Marquis_Lafayette#Conflict_and_exile\">Marquis Lafayette<\/a>&nbsp;hoping to travel to the United States, was taken prisoner by the Austrians.<\/p>\n<p>On 7 September 1792&nbsp;<a title=\"Julien Raimond\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Julien_Raimond\">Julien Raimond<\/a>, leader of a delegation of free men of color from Saint-Domingue (Haiti), petitioned the National Assembly to authorize the formation of a&nbsp;<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Military legion\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Military_legion\">military legion<\/a>&nbsp;of volunteers. The next day, the Parliament established a light cavalry in Lille consisting of volunteers from the&nbsp;<a title=\"French West Indies\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/French_West_Indies\">French West Indies<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Le Midi\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Le_Midi\">Le Midi<\/a>. Dumouriez&#8217; plans to reinstall the&nbsp;<a title=\"French Constitution of 1791\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/French_Constitution_of_1791\">French Constitution of 1791<\/a>, and restore the monarchy in Paris (with&nbsp;<a title=\"Louis Philippe I\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Louis_Philippe_I\">Duke of Chartres<\/a>&nbsp;who had to marry&nbsp;<a title=\"Marie-Th\u00e9r\u00e8se, Duchess of Angoul\u00eame\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Marie-Th%C3%A9r%C3%A8se,_Duchess_of_Angoul%C3%AAme\">Marie-Th\u00e9r\u00e8se, Duchess of Angoul\u00eame<\/a>&nbsp;imprisoned in the&nbsp;<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Temple, Paris\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Temple,_Paris\">Temple, Paris<\/a>) fell apart.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Mercure_fran\u00e7ais,_1_juin_1793_154-1\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chevalier_de_Saint-Georges#cite_note-Mercure_fran%C3%A7ais,_1_juin_1793-154\">[141]<\/a><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-FOOTNOTEBanat2006396_142-1\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chevalier_de_Saint-Georges#cite_note-FOOTNOTEBanat2006396-142\">[130]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;On 4 April the convention declared Dumouriez a traitor and outlaw and put a prize on his head.<sup id=\"cite_ref-FOOTNOTEBanat2006398_156-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chevalier_de_Saint-Georges#cite_note-FOOTNOTEBanat2006398-156\">[143]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;Dumouriez&#8217;s defection on the next day changed the course of the events for the&nbsp;<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Brissotins\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Brissotins\">Brissotins<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-158\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chevalier_de_Saint-Georges#cite_note-158\">[n]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;Robespierre was convinced Brissot and Dumouriez wanted to overthrow the&nbsp;<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"First French Republic\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/First_French_Republic\">First French Republic<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-159\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chevalier_de_Saint-Georges#cite_note-159\">[145]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;On 6 April the&nbsp;<a title=\"Committee of Public Safety\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Committee_of_Public_Safety\">Committee of Public Safety<\/a>&nbsp;was installed. While we lack concrete evidence that St. Georges was aboard the convoy of the commission, the fact that we find Captain Colin, and Lamotte (Lamothe) on the payroll of a ship of the convoy to Saint-Domingue, confirms Louise Fusil&#8217;s account.<sup id=\"cite_ref-FOOTNOTEBanat2006519_183-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chevalier_de_Saint-Georges#cite_note-FOOTNOTEBanat2006519-183\">[168]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;So does&nbsp;<a title=\"Lionel de La Laurencie\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lionel_de_La_Laurencie\">Lionel de La Laurencie<\/a>&#8216;s statement: &#8220;The expedition to Saint-Domingue was Saint-Georges&#8217; last voyage,&#8221; adding that &#8220;Disenchantment and melancholy resulting from his experiences during that voyage must have weighed heavily on his aging shoulders&#8221;<sup id=\"cite_ref-FOOTNOTELa_Laurencie1922484_184-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chevalier_de_Saint-Georges#cite_note-FOOTNOTELa_Laurencie1922484-184\">[169]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;Anyhow, the memoirs of&nbsp;<a title=\"Louise Fusil\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Louise_Fusil\">Louise Fusil<\/a>&nbsp;are full of inaccuracies, errors, or counter-truths.<\/p>\n<p>It seems unlikely that St. Georges has been a part of the official delegation of commissioners civilians sent to Saint-Domingue with their head&nbsp;<a title=\"L\u00e9ger-F\u00e9licit\u00e9 Sonthonax\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/L%C3%A9ger-F%C3%A9licit%C3%A9_Sonthonax\">L\u00e9ger-F\u00e9licit\u00e9 Sonthonax<\/a>, the friend of&nbsp;<a title=\"Jacques Pierre Brissot\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jacques_Pierre_Brissot\">Jacques Pierre Brissot<\/a>, the founder of the&nbsp;<a title=\"Society of the Friends of the Blacks\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Society_of_the_Friends_of_the_Blacks\">Society of the Friends of the Blacks<\/a>. Historians have found to this day no trace of St. Georges in the press of the time, or in the archives of the manifests of ships bound for French ports for Saint-Domingue or making trips back in France. This leads us to think that after his ouster of the armies of the Revolution, Saint-Georges would not have left Europe.<\/p>\n<p>On 16 December 1795, his mother died, and on 29 March 1796, he signed as the executor of her will.<sup id=\"cite_ref-ghcaraibe_2015-art01_185-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chevalier_de_Saint-Georges#cite_note-ghcaraibe_2015-art01-185\">[170]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;It is likely he inherited some money and property. On 19 April 1796 he and Lamothe, the horn player, gave a concert, for the impoverished&nbsp;<a title=\"Carl Stamitz\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Carl_Stamitz\">Carl Stamitz<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-186\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chevalier_de_Saint-Georges#cite_note-186\">[171]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>St. Georges was again building a symphony orchestra. Like his last ensemble,&nbsp;<i>Le Cercle de l&#8217;Harmonie<\/i>&nbsp;was also part of a Masonic lodge performing in what was formerly the Palais Royal. The founders of the new&nbsp;<i>Loge<\/i>, a group of&nbsp;<i>nouveau riche<\/i>&nbsp;gentlemen bent on re-creating the elegance of the old&nbsp;<i>Loge Olympique<\/i>, were delighted to find St. Georges back in Paris. On 11 and 28 April 1797 he gave concerts in the&nbsp;<a title=\"Palais-Royal\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Palais-Royal\">Palais-\u00c9galit\u00e9<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-FOOTNOTEBanat2006451-452_187-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chevalier_de_Saint-Georges#cite_note-FOOTNOTEBanat2006451-452-187\">[172]<\/a><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-188\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chevalier_de_Saint-Georges#cite_note-188\">[173]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;According to&nbsp;<i><a title=\"Mercure de France\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mercure_de_France\">Le Mercure Fran\u00e7ais<\/a><\/i>, &#8220;The concerts &#8230; under the direction of the famous Saint Georges, left nothing to be desired as to the choice of pieces or the superiority of their execution&#8221;. Rejected by the army, St. Georges appealed again saying &#8220;I have no other resources&#8221; but was still rejected. Instead, at the age of 51, he found solace in his music. Sounding like any veteran performer proud of his longevity, he said: &#8220;Towards the end of my life, I was particularly devoted to my violin,&#8221; adding: &#8220;never before did I play it so well!&#8221;<sup id=\"cite_ref-FOOTNOTEBanat2006451_180-1\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chevalier_de_Saint-Georges#cite_note-FOOTNOTEBanat2006451-180\">[165]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;Two of his contemporary obituaries reveal the course of his illness and death.<\/p>\n<dl>\n<dd>La Bo\u00ebssi\u00e8re fils: &#8220;Saint-Georges felt the onset of a disease of the&nbsp;<a title=\"Bladder\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bladder\">bladder<\/a>&nbsp;and, given his usual negligence, paid it little attention; he even kept secret an&nbsp;<a title=\"Ulcer\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ulcer\">ulcer<\/a>, source of his illness;&nbsp;<a title=\"Gangrene\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gangrene\">gangrene<\/a>&nbsp;set in.<sup id=\"cite_ref-FOOTNOTELa_Bo\u00ebssi\u00e8re1818xxii_190-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chevalier_de_Saint-Georges#cite_note-FOOTNOTELa_Bo%C3%ABssi%C3%A8re1818xxii-190\">[175]<\/a><\/sup><\/dd>\n<dd><\/dd>\n<dd>J.S.A. Cuvelier in his&nbsp;<i>Necrology<\/i>: &#8220;For some time he had been tormented by a violent fever &#8230; his vigorous nature had repeatedly fought off this cruel illness; [but] after a month of suffering, the end came on 21&nbsp;<a title=\"Prairial\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Prairial\">Prairial<\/a>&nbsp;[June 9] at five o&#8217;clock in the evening. Sometime before the end, St. Georges stayed with a friend [Captain Duhamel] in the rue Boucherat. His death was marked by the calm of the wise and the dignity of the strong.&#8221;<sup id=\"cite_ref-191\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chevalier_de_Saint-Georges#cite_note-191\">[176]<\/a><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-FOOTNOTEBanat2006453_192-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chevalier_de_Saint-Georges#cite_note-FOOTNOTEBanat2006453-192\">[177]<\/a><\/sup><\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<p>Captain Nicholas Duhamel, an officer in&nbsp;<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"American Legion (French Army)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/American_Legion_(French_Army)\">L\u00e9gion St.-Georges<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a title=\"Aide-de-camp\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Aide-de-camp\">aide-de-camp<\/a>&nbsp;of General Miaczinsky, was his friend until his death.<sup id=\"cite_ref-FOOTNOTEBanat2006373,_393_193-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chevalier_de_Saint-Georges#cite_note-FOOTNOTEBanat2006373,_393-193\">[178]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;Concerned about his old colonel&#8217;s condition, he stopped by Chevalier&#8217;s small flat on rue de Chartres-Saint-Honor\u00e9 and, having found him dying and alone, took him to his apartment where he stayed and was cared for until his death, Saint-Georges&#8217;s died aged 53 in June 1799.
