{"id":10467,"date":"2024-11-29T10:47:57","date_gmt":"2024-11-29T08:47:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tacotichelaar.nl\/wordpress\/?page_id=10467"},"modified":"2024-11-29T10:47:57","modified_gmt":"2024-11-29T08:47:57","slug":"william-macintosh","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/tacotichelaar.nl\/wordpress\/william-macintosh\/","title":{"rendered":"William Macintosh"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>William Macintosh<\/b>&nbsp;() was a Scots Caribbean plantation owner, travel writer, political commentator and controversial author of&nbsp;<i>Travels in Europe, Asia, and Africa<\/i>&nbsp;(1782).<sup id=\"cite_ref-1\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/User:Taksen\/sandbox1#cite_note-1\"><span class=\"cite-bracket\">[<\/span>1<span class=\"cite-bracket\">]<\/span><\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;Macintosh was&nbsp;<a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Justice_of_the_peace\">justice of the peace<\/a>&nbsp;for the&nbsp;<a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Saint_Andrew_Parish,_Grenada\">Saint Andrew Parish, Grenada<\/a>; he had a particular role in the repression of Grenada\u2019s&nbsp;<a title=\"Maroons\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Maroons\">Maroons<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"mw-heading mw-heading2\">\n<h2 id=\"Life\">Life<\/h2>\n<p><span class=\"mw-editsection\"><span class=\"mw-editsection-bracket\">[<\/span><a title=\"Edit section: Life\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/w\/index.php?title=User:Taksen\/sandbox1&amp;action=edit&amp;section=1\">edit<\/a><span class=\"mw-editsection-bracket\">]<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<p>From the age of 18, \u201cthe highest charge of money, papers, &amp; books of accounts\u201d. his role as&nbsp;<i><a title=\"Comptroller\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Comptroller\">Comptroller<\/a>&nbsp;of His Majesty\u2019s Customs<\/i>&nbsp;for the Port of&nbsp;<a title=\"Grenville, Grenada\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Grenville,_Grenada\">Grenville, Grenada<\/a>. He married Ann Montague.<\/p>\n<p>In 1763, William Macintosh bought two plantations from a Frenchman who wanted to leave the island after the British takeover. He bought a third plantation two years later.<\/p>\n<p>To finance his plantations, Macintosh wanted to borrow a sum of \u00a3 20,000 Sterling (\u0192 220,000) from&nbsp;<a title=\"Hope &amp; Co.\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hope_%26_Co.\">Hope &amp; Co.<\/a>&nbsp;<a title=\"Henry Hope\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Henry_Hope\">Henry Hope<\/a>&nbsp;acted as a lender for Macintosh and granted a loan at five per cent interest per annum. The London bankers Samuel Hoare and John Harman, from the banking house&nbsp;<a title=\"Harman and Co.\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Harman_and_Co.\">Gurnell, Hoare, Harman &amp; Co.<\/a>, were Hope &amp; Co.\u2019s administrators in London. This banking house was very familiar to Henry Hope: he had learned his banking trade there in the 1750s.<\/p>\n<p>In July 1770 Fordyce collaborated with John and William Macintosh on Grenada and borrowed 240,000 guilders in bearer bonds from&nbsp;<a title=\"Hope &amp; Co.\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hope_%26_Co.\">Hope &amp; Co.<\/a>&nbsp;Also&nbsp;<a title=\"Sir William Pulteney, 5th Baronet\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sir_William_Pulteney,_5th_Baronet\">Sir William Pulteney<\/a>,&nbsp;<a title=\"Sir Samuel Hannay, 3rd Baronet\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sir_Samuel_Hannay,_3rd_Baronet\">Samuel Hannay<\/a>, Samuel Hoare (1716\u20131796) and&nbsp;<a title=\"Harman and Co.\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Harman_and_Co.\">John Harman<\/a>&nbsp;were involved.<sup id=\"cite_ref-2\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/User:Taksen\/sandbox1#cite_note-2\"><span class=\"cite-bracket\">[<\/span>2<span class=\"cite-bracket\">]<\/span><\/a><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-3\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/User:Taksen\/sandbox1#cite_note-3\"><span class=\"cite-bracket\">[<\/span>3<span class=\"cite-bracket\">]<\/span><\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>One of Macintosh\u2019s guarantors was William Pulteney, one of the richest men in Great Britain, owner of several Caribbean plantations, and member of the&nbsp;<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"British Parliament\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/British_Parliament\">British Parliament<\/a>. Hope &amp; Co set up a negotiation loan, which issued 220 bonds of \u0192 1,000.<\/p>\n<p>In 1770, William Macintosh mortgaged his estates and enslaved people on Grenada to Henry Hope of Amsterdam to raise \u00a320,000 or 220,000 guilders.
