In 1645 he married Geertruid Schuring and stated that he was 29. Davidson lived and worked in <a title=\"Warmoesstraat\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Warmoesstraat\">Warmoesstraat<\/a>, close to the <a title=\"Oude Kerk (Amsterdam)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Oude_Kerk_%28Amsterdam%29\">Oude Kerk<\/a>.&nbsp;In 1648 he appointed <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Anthony van Leeuwenhoek\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Anthony_van_Leeuwenhoek\">Anthony van Leeuwenhoek<\/a> as an assistant,<sup id=\"cite_ref-1\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/William_Davidson_of_Curriehill#cite_note-1\">[1]<\/a><\/sup> who stayed six years in his service.<sup id=\"cite_ref-2\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/William_Davidson_of_Curriehill#cite_note-2\">[2]<\/a><\/sup> During the <a title=\"English Civil War\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/English_Civil_War\">English Civil War<\/a> he choose the side of the <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Stuarts\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Stuarts\">Stuarts<\/a>. In 1652 his wife died. In those years he was living on Nieuwe Waalseiland, close to the harbour and selling wine.<\/p>\n<p>In 1656 he tried to cooperate with the Admiralty of Amsterdam but did not succeed to compete with <a href=\"https:\/\/tacotichelaar.nl\/wordpress\/huisonderzoeken\/de-amsterdamse-familie-trip-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hendrik and Louis Trip<\/a>, dealers in arms and guns.<sup class='footnote'><a href='#fn-1496-1' id='fnref-1496-1' onclick='return fdfootnote_show(1496)'>1<\/a><\/sup> Davidson started to invest heavily in ironworks from 1656, placed Alexander Wishart from Edinburg there as the boss and director of the production in 1658.<sup id=\"cite_ref-9\" class=\"reference\"><a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/William_Davidson_of_Curriehill#cite_note-9\"><span class=\"cite-bracket\">[<\/span>9<span class=\"cite-bracket\">]<\/span><\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;He was involved in a sawing mill and the production of tar.<sup id=\"cite_ref-10\" class=\"reference\"><a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/William_Davidson_of_Curriehill#cite_note-10\"><span class=\"cite-bracket\">[<\/span>10<span class=\"cite-bracket\">]<\/span><\/a> <\/sup><\/p>\n<p>He remarried Geertruid van Dueren who died in 1658. In February 1660 he married Elisabeth Klenck,<sup id=\"cite_ref-4\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/William_Davidson_of_Curriehill#cite_note-4\">[4]<\/a><\/sup> a sister of <a title=\"Johannes Klencke\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Johannes_Klencke\">Johannes Klencke<\/a>, who would present the <a title=\"Klencke Atlas\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Klencke_Atlas\">Klencke Atlas<\/a> to King Charles II &nbsp;to mark the occasion of his&nbsp;<a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Stuart_Restoration\">Restoration<\/a> to the throne, before he left the Dutch Republic at the end of May. Davidson and his brother-in-law went to say goodbye to Charles II in the Hague;<sup id=\"cite_ref-3\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/William_Davidson_of_Curriehill#cite_note-3\">[3] <\/a><\/sup>more than 50,000 came to see his departure. Klencke was made a knight on 19 September 1660 by Charles II.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Tom_Harper_3-1\" class=\"reference\"><a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Johannes_Klencke#cite_note-Tom_Harper-3\"><span class=\"cite-bracket\">[<\/span>3<span class=\"cite-bracket\">]<\/span><\/a><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-barber_4-1\" class=\"reference\"><a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Johannes_Klencke#cite_note-barber-4\"><span class=\"cite-bracket\">[<\/span>4<span class=\"cite-bracket\">]<\/span><\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile Davidson invited Charles sister, <a title=\"Mary, Princess Royal and Princess of Orange\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mary,_Princess_Royal_and_Princess_of_Orange\">Mary,<\/a> Princess Royal and Princes of Orange, to live in the Klencke\/Davidson house on Herengracht 96, to settle an agreement with the Amsterdam burgomasters on the education of her son William III, at that time only ten years old. She left for England after four months. In November, Charles and Mary met with an Embassy of the United Provinces, who came to renew an alliance with England and presented the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dutch_Gift\">Dutch Gift<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-FOOTNOTEGoodwin1893403_26-1\" class=\"reference\"><a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mary,_Princess_Royal_and_Princess_of_Orange#cite_note-FOOTNOTEGoodwin1893403-26\"><span class=\"cite-bracket\">[<\/span>25<span class=\"cite-bracket\">]<\/span><\/a><\/sup> The consortium likely hoped to gain favourable trade agreements with Britain for slave trade and their sugar plantations,<sup id=\"cite_ref-bmdigit_7-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/William_Davidson_of_Curriehill#cite_note-bmdigit-7\"><span class=\"cite-bracket\">[<\/span>7<span class=\"cite-bracket\">]<\/span><\/a><\/sup> Klencke may have accompanied them, to discuss &#8216;unrestricted trade&#8217;, and the&nbsp;<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Act_of_Navigation\">Act of Navigation<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-10\" class=\"reference\"><a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Johannes_Klencke#cite_note-10\"><span class=\"cite-bracket\">[<\/span>10<span class=\"cite-bracket\">] <\/span><\/a>&nbsp;<\/sup>Mary died before the end of the year, suffering from small pox. Davidson seems to have been rewarded with an appointment as conservator of the Staple in <a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Veere\">Veere<\/a>,<sup id=\"cite_ref-13\" class=\"reference\"><a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Johannes_Klencke#cite_note-13\"><span class=\"cite-bracket\">[<\/span>13<span class=\"cite-bracket\">] <\/span><\/a>&nbsp;<\/sup>and would be knighted as a <a title=\"Baronet\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Baronet\">baronet <\/a>in the year after.<sup id=\"cite_ref-5\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/William_Davidson_of_Curriehill#cite_note-5\">[5]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 359px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/thumb\/6\/68\/WLM2011_-_Amsterdam_-_Herengracht_96.JPG\/500px-WLM2011_-_Amsterdam_-_Herengracht_96.JPG?20110913205447\" alt=\"File:WLM2011 - Amsterdam - Herengracht 96.JPG\" width=\"359\" height=\"539\"><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Herengracht 96, four windows wide.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<pre>In September 1660, England started peace talks with Spain and Portugal, and in&nbsp; the Act of Navigation was renewed by the English Parliament. The English thus became a serious threat to fishing, but especially in trade on the East and on the West. In December 1660, Charles and his brother <a title=\"James II of England\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/James_II_of_England\">James<\/a>&nbsp;founded the&nbsp;<a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Royal_African_Company\">Royal African Company<\/a> (RAC), challenging the Dutch in West Africa.&nbsp;<\/pre>\n<p>In 1661 after the brothers Trip had to give up their trade in Sweden, Davidson was able to take over for a short period of time, but Jacoba van Erp, the widow of G. Bartolotti won.<sup class='footnote'><a href='#fn-1496-2' id='fnref-1496-2' onclick='return fdfootnote_show(1496)'>2<\/a><\/sup> In 1662 he was appointed as the King&#8217;s agent in Amsterdam.<\/p>\n<pre>In July 1662, Spain re-established the asiento. This asiento was granted to two bankers from Genoa, Grillo &amp; Lomel\u00edn, residing in Madrid [6] with a branch in Panama. Grillo &amp; Lomel\u00edn, in turn, outsourced the asiento to the West India Company[7] and the Royal Adventurers, Trading into Africa.\r\n\r\nThe <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Second Dutch War\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Second_Dutch_War\">Second Dutch War<\/a> had been largely an outcome of rivalry on the African coast. At some time Davidson intermediated between Charles II and <a title=\"Johan de Witt\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Johan_de_Witt\">Johan de Witt?<\/a><\/pre>\n<p>In 1664 he moved to Hamburg. In 1666 he was involved in a salt company in Denmark, together with <a title=\"Cort Adeler\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cort_Adeler\">Cort Adeler<\/a>. He mined for iron at Mostadmark (in the present-day <a title=\"Malvik Municipality\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Malvik_Municipality\">Malvik Municipality<\/a>), east of&nbsp;<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Trondheim_(city)\">Trondheim<\/a>&nbsp;with permission for 20 years from&nbsp;<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Frederik_III_of_Denmark\">Frederik III of Denmark<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hannibal_Sehested_(governor)\">Hannibal Sehested (governor)<\/a>&nbsp;of Norway.<\/p>\n<p>In 1666 he sold his ironworks in Trondheim to his brother-in-law Coenraad van Klenck, as well as his part in the salt company. &nbsp;In 1667 his wife died. Davidson moved to Edinburgh?&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In 1668 he became Lord of <a title=\"Curriehill\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Curriehill\">Curriehill<\/a>. He tried to move the staple from Veere, a Dutch town with a large Scottish population, to Dordrecht.<sup id=\"cite_ref-6\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/William_Davidson_of_Curriehill#cite_note-6\">[6]<\/a><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-7\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/William_Davidson_of_Curriehill#cite_note-7\">[7] <\/a><\/sup>On 14 October 1670 he started mining for copper near <a title=\"Kl\u00e6bu (village)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kl%C3%A6bu_(village)\">Kl\u00e6bu<\/a>, south of&nbsp;Trondheim, according to a letter from King&nbsp;<a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Christian_IV_of_Denmark\">Christian IV of Denmark<\/a>. He started the Ulrichsdal Mining Company, and build a melting-cabin at Hyttefossen in Kl\u00e6bu. Around 1672 Davidson was involved in the tobacco trade on Virginia.<\/p>\n<p>In an unknown year, but after 1678, when he made his will in Amsterdam,<sup id=\"cite_ref-8\" class=\"reference\"><a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/William_Davidson_of_Curriehill#cite_note-8\">[8]<\/a><\/sup> he settled in Scotland again? Four children Bernard (1648-), Elisabeth (1651-), Catharina Geertrui (1663-), Agnes (1666-) inherited; Catharina his Indonesian silver, and the portraits of his parents-in-law.
