He was the first known European explorer to reach the islands of <a title=\"Van Diemen's Land\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Van_Diemen%27s_Land\">Van Diemen&#8217;s Land<\/a> (now <a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tasmania\">Tasmania<\/a>) and <a title=\"New Zealand\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_Zealand\">New Zealand<\/a>, and to sight the <a title=\"Fiji\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fiji\">Fiji<\/a> islands. The oldest available source mentioning him dates 27 December 1631 when, as a widower living in Amsterdam, he became engaged to marry 21-year-old Jannetje Tjaers from the <a title=\"Jordaan\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jordaan\">Jordaan<\/a> district of the city.<sup id=\"cite_ref-2\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Abel_Tasman#cite_note-2\">[2]<\/a><\/sup> In 1633 he sailed from <a title=\"Texel\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Texel\">Texel<\/a> to <a title=\"Jakarta\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jakarta\">Batavia<\/a> in the service of the Dutch East India Company (VOC), taking the southern <a title=\"Brouwer Route\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Brouwer_Route\">Brouwer Route<\/a>. Tasman helped to punish the people from <a title=\"Seram Island\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Seram_Island\">Seram Island<\/a> who had sold spices to others than the Dutch. In August 1637 he was back in Amsterdam, and the following year he signed on for another ten years and took his wife with him to Batavia. On 25 March 1638 he tried to sell his property in the <a title=\"Jordaan\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jordaan\">Jordaan<\/a>, but the purchase was cancelled. In 1639 he was second-in-command of an exploration expedition in the north Pacific under <a title=\"Matthijs Quast\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Matthijs_Quast\">Matthijs Quast<\/a>. The reason for this was the crew could be fed well on the island; there was plenty of fresh water and timber to repair the ships. Tasman got the assistance of the governor <a title=\"Adriaan van der Stel\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Adriaan_van_der_Stel\">Adriaan van der Stel<\/a>. Because of the prevailing winds Mauritius was chosen as a turning point. After a four-week stay on the island both ships left on 8 October using the <a title=\"Roaring Forties\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Roaring_Forties\">Roaring Forties<\/a> to sail West as fast as possible. (No one had gone as far as <a title=\"Pieter Nuyts\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pieter_Nuyts\">Pieter Nuyts<\/a> in 1626\/27.) Proceeding south he skirted the southern end of Tasmania and turned north-east, Tasman then tried to work his two ships into <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Adventure Bay\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Adventure_Bay\">Adventure Bay<\/a> on the east coast of <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"South Bruny Island\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/South_Bruny_Island\">South Bruny Island<\/a> where he was blown out to sea by a storm, this area he named <a title=\"Storm Bay\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Storm_Bay\">Storm Bay<\/a>. Two days later Tasman anchored to the North of Cape Frederick Hendrick just North of the <a title=\"Forestier Peninsula\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Forestier_Peninsula\">Forestier Peninsula<\/a>. Tasman then landed in Blackman Bay \u2013 in the larger <a title=\"Marion Bay, Tasmania\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Marion_Bay,_Tasmania\">Marion Bay<\/a>. The next day, an attempt was made to land in North Bay; however, because the sea was too rough the carpenter swam through the surf and planted the Dutch flag in North Bay. Tasman endured a very rough journey from Tasmania to New Zealand. In one of his diary entries Tasman credits his compass, claiming it was the only thing that kept him alive. On 13 December they sighted land on the north-west coast of the <a title=\"South Island\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/South_Island\">South Island<\/a>, New Zealand, becoming the first Europeans to do so.<sup id=\"cite_ref-16\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Abel_Tasman#cite_note-16\">[16]<\/a><\/sup> Tasman named it <i>Staten Landt<\/i> on the assumption that it was connected to an island (<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Staten Island, Argentina\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Staten_Island,_Argentina\">Staten Island, Argentina<\/a>) at the south of the tip of South America. He sailed north, then east and 5 days later anchored about 7\u00a0km from the coast. He sent ship&#8217;s boats to gather water, but one of his boats was attacked by <a title=\"M\u0101ori people\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/M%C4%81ori_people\">M\u0101ori<\/a> in a double hulled <a title=\"Waka (canoe)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Waka_%28canoe%29\">waka<\/a> (canoes) and four of his men were attacked and killed by <a title=\"Mere (weapon)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mere_%28weapon%29\">mere<\/a>. As Tasman sailed out of the bay he was again attacked, this time by 11 waka . While passing the <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Fiji Islands\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fiji_Islands\">Fiji Islands<\/a> Tasman&#8217;s ships came close to being wrecked on the dangerous reefs of the north-eastern part of the Fiji group. He charted the eastern tip of <a title=\"Vanua Levu\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vanua_Levu\">Vanua Levu<\/a> and <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Cikobia\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cikobia\">Cikobia<\/a> before making his way back into the open sea. He missed the <a title=\"Torres Strait\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Torres_Strait\">Torres Strait<\/a> between New Guinea and Australia, and continued his voyage westwards along the north Australian coast. He mapped the north coast of Australia making observations on the land, called <a title=\"New Holland (Australia)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_Holland_%28Australia%29\">New Holland<\/a>, and its people.<\/p>\n<p>From the point of view of the <a title=\"Dutch East India Company\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dutch_East_India_Company\">Dutch East India Company<\/a>, Tasman&#8217;s explorations were a disappointment: he had neither found a promising area for trade nor a useful new shipping route. Although received modestly, the company was upset to a degree that Tasman didn&#8217;t fully explore the lands he found, and decided that a more &#8220;persistent explorer&#8221; should be chosen for any future expeditions.<sup id=\"cite_ref-19\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Abel_Tasman#cite_note-19\">[19]<\/a><\/sup> For over a century, until the era of <a title=\"James Cook\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/James_Cook\">James Cook<\/a>, Tasmania and New Zealand were not visited by Europeans \u2013 mainland Australia was visited, but usually only by accident.<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Later_life\" class=\"mw-headline\">Later life<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>On 2 November 1644 Abel Tasman was appointed a member of the Council of Justice at Batavia. He went to Sumatra in 1646, and in August 1647 to Siam (now <a title=\"Thailand\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thailand\">Thailand<\/a>) with letters from the company to the King. In May 1648 he was in charge of an expedition sent to <a title=\"Manila\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Manila\">Manila<\/a> to try to intercept and loot the Spanish silver ships coming from America, but he had no success and returned to Batavia in January 1649. In November 1649 he was charged and found guilty of having in the previous year hanged one of his men without trial, was suspended from his office of commander, fined, and made to pay compensation to the relatives of the sailor. On 5 January 1651 he was formally reinstated in his rank and spent his remaining years at Batavia. He was in good circumstances, being one of the larger landowners in the town. He died at Batavia on 10 October 1659 and was survived by his second wife and a daughter by his first wife. His property was divided between his wife and his daughter by his first marriage.
