{"id":9211,"date":"2023-04-30T14:44:08","date_gmt":"2023-04-30T12:44:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tacotichelaar.nl\/wordpress\/?page_id=9211"},"modified":"2023-04-30T14:46:02","modified_gmt":"2023-04-30T12:46:02","slug":"john-skey-eustace","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/tacotichelaar.nl\/wordpress\/john-skey-eustace\/","title":{"rendered":"John Skey Eustace"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>John Skey Eustace<\/b>&nbsp;(born 10 August, 1760 in&nbsp;<a title=\"Flushing, Queens\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Flushing,_Queens\">Flushing, Queens<\/a>, died 25 August 1805 in&nbsp;<a title=\"Newburgh, New York\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Newburgh,_New_York\">Newburgh, New York<\/a>) was an officer and a veteran of both the American and French Revolutionary Wars.<sup id=\"cite_ref-auto5_1-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Skey_Eustace#cite_note-auto5-1\">[1]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;A mercurial figure, Eustace was a revolutionary soldier, colonel of the&nbsp;<a title=\"Continental Army\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Continental_Army\">Continental Army<\/a>&nbsp;(1781), and&nbsp;<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Marechal-de-camp\">mar\u00e9chal de camp<\/a>&nbsp;in the&nbsp;<a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/French_Revolutionary_Army\">French Revolutionary Army<\/a>&nbsp;between 1792 and 1793. In 1794 he supported the&nbsp;<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Batavian revolution\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Batavian_revolution\">Batavian revolution<\/a>&nbsp;and arrested for a short time. In February 1797 he was expelled from France, suspected of spying for the British. He was arrested in Dover for his advise to the Dutch revolutionaries and subsequently expelled from England, after which he traveled to America retired in New York. Eustace regularly published his official and private correspondence. From 1738-40 Campbell brought 83 families from Scotland to New York at his own expense on the false promise of land grants from the New York colonial governor&nbsp;<a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/William_Cosby\">William Cosby<\/a>.&nbsp;<sup id=\"cite_ref-6\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Skey_Eustace#cite_note-6\">[6]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;His daughter Margaret (1733-1809) was born on&nbsp;<a title=\"Islay\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Islay\">Islay<\/a>&nbsp;(Inner Hebrides) and married at a young age to Dr. John Eustace (1720-1769), a colonial physician and&nbsp;<a title=\"Justice of the peace\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Justice_of_the_peace\">justice of the peace<\/a>&nbsp;who corresponded with&nbsp;<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Laurence Stern\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Laurence_Stern\">Laurence Stern<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-7\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Skey_Eustace#cite_note-7\">[7]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;Around 1764 his father left his family and moved to&nbsp;<a title=\"Wilmington, North Carolina\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wilmington,_North_Carolina\">Wilmington, North Carolina<\/a>. John&#8217;s sister Kitty had become&nbsp;<a title=\"John Murray, 4th Earl of Dunmore\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Murray,_4th_Earl_of_Dunmore\">Lord Dunmore<\/a>\u2019s mistress when she was still a teenager and he was governor of New York. On gaining his post in Virginia in 1771, Dunmore arrived with Kitty\u2019s mother and little brother in tow.<sup class=\"noprint Inline-Template Template-Fact\">[<i><a title=\"Wikipedia:Citation needed\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wikipedia:Citation_needed\"><span title=\"This claim needs references to reliable sources. (January 2023)\">citation needed<\/span><\/a><\/i>]<\/sup>&nbsp;Eustace grew up in&nbsp;<a title=\"Norfolk, Virginia\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Norfolk,_Virginia\">Norfolk, Virginia<\/a>, where his mother ran a boarding house.<sup id=\"cite_ref-8\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Skey_Eustace#cite_note-8\">[8]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;She was friendly with&nbsp;<a title=\"Thomas Burke (North Carolina politician)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thomas_Burke_(North_Carolina_politician)\">Thomas Burke<\/a>. His travel companion, a British officer, was concealing Lord Dunmore&#8217;s military plans.<sup id=\"cite_ref-10\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Skey_Eustace#cite_note-10\">[10]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;Somehow the fifteen-year-old ended up being marched to the headquarters of Gen. (January 2023)\">citation needed<\/span><\/a><\/i>]<\/sup>&nbsp;He joined the&nbsp;<a title=\"Continental Army\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Continental_Army\">Continental Army<\/a>&nbsp;during the&nbsp;<a title=\"Siege of Boston\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Siege_of_Boston\">Siege of Boston<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-11\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Skey_Eustace#cite_note-11\">[11]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;After the Continental Army was reorganized Eustace served successively as an&nbsp;<a title=\"Aide-de-camp\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Aide-de-camp\">aide-de-camp<\/a>&nbsp;to&nbsp;<a title=\"Charles Lee (general)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Charles_Lee_(general)\">Charles Lee<\/a>,&nbsp;<a title=\"Joseph Reed (politician)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Joseph_Reed_(politician)\">Joseph Reed<\/a>,&nbsp;<a title=\"John Sullivan (general)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Sullivan_(general)\">John Sullivan<\/a>&nbsp;(1777) and&nbsp;<a title=\"Nathanael Greene\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nathanael_Greene\">Nathanael Greene<\/a>&nbsp;(1779).<sup id=\"cite_ref-auto_12-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Skey_Eustace#cite_note-auto-12\">[12]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Eustace participated in the repulse of the&nbsp;<a title=\"Battle of Sullivan's Island\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Battle_of_Sullivan%27s_Island\">first British attack on Charleston<\/a>,&nbsp;<a title=\"Battle of Trenton\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Battle_of_Trenton\">Battles of Trenton<\/a>,&nbsp;<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Battle at Princeton\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Battle_at_Princeton\">Princeton<\/a>, and&nbsp;<a title=\"Battle of Germantown\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Battle_of_Germantown\">Germantown<\/a>. In 1778 he was at the&nbsp;<a title=\"Battle of Rhode Island\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Battle_of_Rhode_Island\">siege of Newport<\/a>, during the military campaign of 1779 against the&nbsp;<a title=\"Iroquois\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Iroquois\">Iroquois<\/a>&nbsp;and loyalists on the New York border, known as the &#8220;<a title=\"Sullivan Expedition\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sullivan_Expedition\">Sullivan Expedition<\/a>&#8220;. General Lee regarded him as his adopted son and declared him as his heir,<sup id=\"cite_ref-13\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Skey_Eustace#cite_note-13\">[13]<\/a><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-auto4_14-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Skey_Eustace#cite_note-auto4-14\">[14]<\/a><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-15\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Skey_Eustace#cite_note-15\">[15]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;but the handsome Eustace decided to desert the unpredictable Lee who lost the&nbsp;<a title=\"Battle of Monmouth\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Battle_of_Monmouth\">Battle of Monmouth<\/a>. Lee was subsequently court-martialed and his military service was brought to an end. Archibald Campbell<\/a>, a respected and perhaps related&nbsp;<a title=\"List of colonial governors of Georgia\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/List_of_colonial_governors_of_Georgia\">governor of Georgia<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-19\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Skey_Eustace#cite_note-19\">[19]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;In January 1780 he resigned from the army but not from war.<sup id=\"cite_ref-20\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Skey_Eustace#cite_note-20\">[20]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;He was involved in the&nbsp;<a title=\"Battle of the Chesapeake\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Battle_of_the_Chesapeake\">Battle of the Chesapeake<\/a>&nbsp;and appointed colonel on 29 August 1781 of the militia in&nbsp;<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"State of Georgia\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/State_of_Georgia\">State of Georgia<\/a>&nbsp;by&nbsp;<a title=\"Nathan Brownson\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nathan_Brownson\">Nathan Brownson<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-21\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Skey_Eustace#cite_note-21\">[21]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;In the same year he became adjutant general and assisted governor&nbsp;<a title=\"Stephen Heard\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Stephen_Heard\">Stephen Heard<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-22\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Skey_Eustace#cite_note-22\">[22]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;In he lived in&nbsp;<a title=\"Augusta, Georgia\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Augusta,_Georgia\">Augusta, Georgia<\/a>&nbsp;and contacted&nbsp;<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Governor Morris\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Governor_Morris\">Governor Morris<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-23\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Skey_Eustace#cite_note-23\">[23]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;In 1782 he lived in&nbsp;<a title=\"Ebenezer, Georgia\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ebenezer,_Georgia\">Ebenezer, Georgia<\/a>;<sup id=\"cite_ref-24\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Skey_Eustace#cite_note-24\">[24]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;now a ghost town then the capital.<\/p>\n<dl>\n<dd>During the American Revolution, many Georgians and Carolinians moved to Florida along with their slaves. In December he was sent on a mission to Saint-Augustine,&nbsp;<a title=\"East Florida\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/East_Florida\">East Florida<\/a>&nbsp;to deal with the council (<a title=\"Patrick Tonyn\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Patrick_Tonyn\">Gen. Tonyn<\/a>) on captured slaves.<sup id=\"cite_ref-25\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Skey_Eustace#cite_note-25\">[25]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;In March he returned to&nbsp;<a title=\"Charleston, South Carolina\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Charleston,_South_Carolina\">Charlestown<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-27\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Skey_Eustace#cite_note-27\">[a]<\/a><\/sup><\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<blockquote class=\"templatequote\"><p>Having been informed that&nbsp;<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Sir Guy Carleton\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sir_Guy_Carleton\">Sir Guy Carleton<\/a>&nbsp;has ordered the restoration of such slaves as have left their owners and followed the British armies and fleet, he has appointed Col. John Skey Eustace and Maj. Peter Deveaux as commissioner to arrange the business with&nbsp;<a title=\"Alexander Leslie (British Army officer)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alexander_Leslie_(British_Army_officer)\">Gen. He then personally visited Maastricht, where he dined with&nbsp;<a title=\"Prince Frederick of Hesse-Kassel\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Prince_Frederick_of_Hesse-Kassel\">Major General Prince von Hesse-Darmstadt<\/a>, the German commander in Austrian service. As a result, he was removed from command, according to himself no longer part of the army. On 13 December, Miranda the only general from Latin America in French service took over. Dumouriez planned to arrest and sent Eustace to Paris to explain his behavior before the&nbsp;<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Convention Nationale\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Convention_Nationale\">Convention Nationale<\/a>. However, Eustace ignored the order and, claiming to be dangerously ill, retired to the Carmelite nuns at&nbsp;<a title=\"Tongerlo Abbey\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tongerlo_Abbey\">Tongerlo Abbey<\/a>, where he successfully resisted an attempt to question and arrest him.<\/p>\n<p>On 1 February 1793 the&nbsp;<a title=\"French First Republic\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/French_First_Republic\">French First Republic<\/a>&nbsp;declared war on&nbsp;<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"George III of England\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/George_III_of_England\">George III of England<\/a>&nbsp;and the&nbsp;<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"William III of Orange\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/William_III_of_Orange\">William III of Orange<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-TPC1793_44-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Skey_Eustace#cite_note-TPC1793-44\">[43]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;By mid-February&nbsp;<a title=\"Lazare Carnot\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lazare_Carnot\">Lazare Carnot<\/a>&nbsp;proposed that annexation be undertaken on behalf of French interests whether or not the people to be annexed so wished.<sup id=\"cite_ref-45\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Skey_Eustace#cite_note-45\">[44]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;It seems both Eustace and Miranda disagreed; on 14 March Eustace wrote a letter to Dumouriez.<sup id=\"cite_ref-46\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Skey_Eustace#cite_note-46\">[45]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>After the disaster at the&nbsp;<a title=\"Battle of Neerwinden (1793)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Battle_of_Neerwinden_(1793)\">Battle of Neerwinden (1793)<\/a>&nbsp;Eustace returned to Antwerp.<sup id=\"cite_ref-47\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Skey_Eustace#cite_note-47\">[46]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;On 20 March Danton and&nbsp;<a title=\"Charles-Fran\u00e7ois Delacroix\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Charles-Fran%C3%A7ois_Delacroix\">Delacroix<\/a>&nbsp;were sent to his headquarters at&nbsp;<a title=\"Saint-Amand-les-Eaux\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Saint-Amand-les-Eaux\">Saint-Amand-les-Eaux<\/a>&nbsp;to interrogate Dumouriez and sent Miranda, Valence, Luckner, etc. back to Paris. Aware that if he returned to Paris he would probably be executed, Dumouriez turned to the Austrians.<sup id=\"cite_ref-48\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Skey_Eustace#cite_note-48\">[47]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;Dumouriez&#8217;s defection on 5 April changed the course of the events.<\/p>\n<p>On 29 March Eustace was brought to Paris by two gendarmes. Eustace advised organizing the local militia, the distribution of food and suggested the Dutch pay the French army, which happened in the summer of 1795 (see&nbsp;<a title=\"Pieter Stadnitski\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pieter_Stadnitski\">Pieter Stadnitski<\/a>). Eustace, housed at the Boston hotel, at the fashionable rue Vivienne, (<a title=\"2nd arrondissement of Paris\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2nd_arrondissement_of_Paris\">2nd arrondissement of Paris<\/a>), came under the surveillance of the police. In February 1797 he was expelled from France, as the&nbsp;<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Directoire\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Directoire\">Directory<\/a>&nbsp;was suspicious that Eustace was spying for the British.<sup id=\"cite_ref-75\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Skey_Eustace#cite_note-75\">[73]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;<sup id=\"cite_ref-76\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Skey_Eustace#cite_note-76\">[74]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;He moved to England (possibly together with Harris) but was arrested at Dover mid-February.<sup id=\"cite_ref-77\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Skey_Eustace#cite_note-77\">[75]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;He was invited in&nbsp;<a title=\"Burlington House\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Burlington_House\">Burlington House<\/a>&nbsp;and interrogated on the book bearing his name. He was accused in&nbsp;<a title=\"The Times\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Times\">The Times<\/a>&nbsp;and several other newspapers of supporting LaFayette, Dumouriez and the&nbsp;<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Batavian revolution\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Batavian_revolution\">Batavian revolution<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-78\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Skey_Eustace#cite_note-78\">[76]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;In early March he was ordered to leave England within 24 hours but was not allowed to leave for France. Eustace travelled to Gravesend, Greenwich and Dartford to &#8220;embark for any part of the world he may propose to go&#8221;. He published an offensive pamphlet, the&nbsp;<i>Exile of Major General Eustace.<\/i><sup id=\"cite_ref-79\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Skey_Eustace#cite_note-79\">[77]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;He was angry at&nbsp;<a title=\"Rufus King\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rufus_King\">Rufus King<\/a>, the new ambassador to Great Britain.<sup id=\"cite_ref-80\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Skey_Eustace#cite_note-80\">[78]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;On 4 February 1798 he was arrested in the Hague, and wrote a letter abjuring his heresies.<sup id=\"cite_ref-auto5_1-1\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Skey_Eustace#cite_note-auto5-1\">[1]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>In June 1798 he asked the&nbsp;<a title=\"Constitutional Convention (United States)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Constitutional_Convention_(United_States)\">Constitutional Convention<\/a>&nbsp;to be paid for military services rendered during the&nbsp;<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"American revolutionary war\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/American_revolutionary_war\">American revolutionary war<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-auto4_14-2\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Skey_Eustace#cite_note-auto4-14\">[14]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;In November he travelled to Savannah to settle his mother\u2019s business affairs. He offered a trunk containing all his papers, as well as personal as official to&nbsp;<a title=\"Alexander Hamilton\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alexander_Hamilton\">Alexander Hamilton<\/a>&nbsp;who regarded him \u201ca very unwelcome correspondent.\u201d<sup id=\"cite_ref-81\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Skey_Eustace#cite_note-81\">[79]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;He retired in&nbsp;<a title=\"Newburgh, New York\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Newburgh,_New_York\">Newburgh, New York<\/a>. In January 1805 he joined the&nbsp;<i>Benevolent Society of&nbsp;<a title=\"Orange County, New York\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Orange_County,_New_York\">Orange County<\/a><\/i>&nbsp;but died in the same year.<sup id=\"cite_ref-82\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Skey_Eustace#cite_note-82\">[80]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Family\" class=\"mw-headline\">Family<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>In 1772, Catherine &#8220;Kitty&#8221; Eustace married James Blair, the son of the Virginia governor&nbsp;<a title=\"John Blair Sr.\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Blair_Sr.\">John Blair Sr.<\/a>. Kitty was a fine dancer.<sup id=\"cite_ref-83\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Skey_Eustace#cite_note-83\">[81]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;Their scandalous divorce trial later that year in Williamsburg became a battle over Blair&#8217;s estate after his death in 1773. Kitty Eustace was represented by&nbsp;<a title=\"John Randolph (loyalist)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Randolph_(loyalist)\">John Randolph<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a title=\"Patrick Henry\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Patrick_Henry\">Patrick Henry<\/a>&nbsp;while the estate was represented by&nbsp;<a title=\"Edmund Pendleton\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Edmund_Pendleton\">Edmund Pendleton<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a title=\"James Mercer (judge)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/James_Mercer_(judge)\">James Mercer<\/a>&nbsp;with written arguments prepared by&nbsp;<a title=\"Thomas Jefferson\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thomas_Jefferson\">Thomas Jefferson<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-84\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Skey_Eustace#cite_note-84\">[82]<\/a><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-85\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Skey_Eustace#cite_note-85\">[83]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;Kitty Eustace then married&nbsp;<a title=\"Seth John Cuthbert\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Seth_John_Cuthbert\">Seth John Cuthbert<\/a>&nbsp;in February 1777. Cuthbert became Chairman of the&nbsp;<a title=\"List of former members of the Georgia Executive Council\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/List_of_former_members_of_the_Georgia_Executive_Council\">Supreme Executive Council of Georgia<\/a>&nbsp;in 1779. Her mother\u2019s visits to Georgia during the British occupation aroused suspicions of espionage.<sup id=\"cite_ref-86\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Skey_Eustace#cite_note-86\">[84]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>John S.
